December 2009 Alert – Virus’
are on the Rise Rogue anti-virus programs are becoming the most prevalent threat to users and have increased exponentially in 2009. Rogue AV programs are presented to users who are surfing the web and stumble across an infected web site. Users are then presented with what appears to be a legitimate program, usually telling them they are infected and need to run a scan or download a program to protect their computer. The process of running the scan or downloading the “protection” is what allows the threat to take hold on the users PC. In some cases, even clicking on a cancel button is enough to invite the rogue program onto their computers. Here are a few tips on how to cancel the program popup without allowing the virus to load. Click on the “X” in the upper right corner of the window, try stopping Internet Explorer from running, or completely reboot your computer. Current industry reports indicate that there are nearly 637,000 different rogue AV variants currently active on the Internet. You may recognize some of the names as: Antivirus 2010 Industry statistics show that Symantec/Norton have a 55% increase in infections over the past year, with every major security vendor being impacted by these new threats. At Security Coverage, they have seen the impact this is having in the types of infection removal cases they are performing. Although they are well below the increase of infections that other security vendors are seeing, they have still seen an increase in normal infection traffic and the number of rogue AV programs impacting customers. To counteract the rise in rogue AV programs, Security Coverage has expanded their malware collection methods and processes. Their Malware Prevention team has expanded its investment in malware sample subscriptions. These subscriptions provide them with a daily feed of the newest variants so they are able to respond with virus signatures to remove and prevent the rogue AV programs from taking hold. In addition, they have re-designed their infection removal tools to provide them copies of the infections that they see in the wild. These copies are processed and a custom prevention code is created on a daily basis and released to their customer base. Subscribe to SecureIT Plus to ensure you have the best protection available, plus 24x7 support. Don’t wait until you have this nasty virus. Call today at 644-5411! |
